چکیده
Abstract Purpose Global food production needs to increase provide enough for over 9 billion people living by 2050. Traditional animal is among the leading causes climate change and occupation of land. Edible insects might be a sustainable protein supply humans, but environmental life cycle assessment (LCA) studies on them are scarce. This study performs an LCA small-scale system yellow mealworms ( Tenebrio molitor ) in Central Europe that supplied with organic feedstuff. Methods A combined ReCiPe midpoint (H) CED method used estimate potential impacts from cradle-to-gate. Impact categories include global warming (GWP), non-renewable energy use (NREU), agricultural land (ALOP), terrestrial acidification (TAP) freshwater eutrophication (FEP). The robustness results tested via sensitivity analyses Monte Carlo simulations. Nutritional Value of Mealworm, Tenebrio molitor as Food Source
Nutrition value of mealworm, Tenebrio molitor was analyzed due to increasing demand of usage as a protein source for domestic animals and even further for human consumption. The purpose of the present work was to determine the chemical compostion of the Tenebrio molitor larvae, adult that were maintained under standard condition for further usage of mass-rearing system and its exuvium, and excr...
متن کاملThe Yellow Mealworm as a Novel Source of Protein
Problem statement: Yellow mealworms of different sizes (4.8-182.7 mg) were grown in a medium of wheat flour and brewer’s yeast (95:5 by weight) to evaluate their potential as a protein source. Approach: There was an initial adjustment period (3-9 days) observed during which the younger larvae (4.8-61.1 mg) grew slowly while the older ones (80.3-182.7 mg) lost weight. After this initial period, ...
متن کاملReducing sugar-producing bacteria from guts of Tenebrio molitor Linnaeus (yellow mealworm) for lignocellulosic waste minimization.
The guts of Tenebrio Molitor Linnaeus (yellow mealworm) were used as inocula to isolate reducing sugar-producing bacteria during bioconversion of lignocellulose to reducing sugars in this study. Three carbon sources, i.e., carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), filter paper (FP), and lignocellulosic waste (LIG), were specifically selected; and two types of culturing media (M1 and M2) were used. After 6...
متن کاملDifferences in critical thermal maxima and mortality across life stages of the mealworm beetle Tenebrio molitor.
Thermal limits to activity profoundly affect the abundance and distribution of ectothermic animals. Upper thermal limits to activity are typically reported as the critical thermal maximum (CT(max)), the temperature at which activity becomes uncontrolled. Thermolimit respirometry is a new technique that allows CT(max) to be quantified in small animals, such as insects, as the point of spiracular...
متن کاملEvaluation of Genotoxicity and 28-day Oral Dose Toxicity on Freeze-dried Powder of Tenebrio molitor Larvae (Yellow Mealworm)
The larval form of Tenebrio molitor (T. molitor) has been eaten in many countries and provides benefits as a new food source of protein for humans. However, no information exists regarding its safety for humans. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the genotoxicity and repeated dose oral toxicity of the freeze-dried powder of T. molitor larvae. The genotoxic potential was evaluate...
